about The Spine

The Royal College of Physicians' northern home and the healthiest building in the North West

Located in Paddington Village, in the heart of Liverpool's Knowledge Quarter, The Spine is the northern home of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and it was officially inaugurated in 2021.

Also known as the 'giraffe building', The Spine owes its name to the striking staircase on its north elevation, which resembles the human vertebrae and connects 14 floors of offices, public areas, and spaces for events and conferences.

The curious and distinctive pattern on the building's façade has been created using the complicated mathematical Voronoi pattern. It comprises 23 million individual polygons, making each glass wall panel different and unique.

Voronoi patterns are extremely common in nature and can be found in leaves, cells and animal fur. In the case of The Spine, the polygons take inspiration from the human skin cells.

The Spine as a beacon of excellence

The Spine was built to be a beacon of excellence, bringing together local communities, improving the wellbeing of its occupants and operating in a sustainable way.

Wellbeing and sustainability are at the core of the building's design.

In fact, The Spine has been built according to the ethos and principles constituting the WELL Building Standard, making it the healthiest building in the North West and one of the healthiest in the UK. The WELL Building Standard is the premier standard for building, interior spaces and communities seeking to implement, validate and measure features that support health and wellness. Its ten concepts - Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind and Community - have all been embedded in The Spine at design stage and are core to both the building's architecture and operations going on within.

In April 2024, Spaces at The Spine and the floors belonging to the Royal College of Physicians became WELL Certified™ at the Platinum level through the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), becoming the only building in the city to hold the prestigious title.
