Sustainability credentials & pledges
Sustainability is the backbone of Spaces at The Spine. Located in the city's Knowledge Quarter, we combine world-class event spaces with a continuous commitment to reducing our impact on the planet. From environmentally conscious architectural and design features to strong waste management systems and seasonal catering, our Liverpool venue sets a benchmark for sustainable venues and events alike.
As a new-build event venue, we had the opportunity to prioritise sustainability from our building's design phase through to construction, optimising energy efficiency and incorporating natural and recycled materials. Sustainability features you will find at Spaces at The Spine include:
Spaces at The Spine partners with socially responsible caterer Company of Cooks to champion plant-based dining and create menus that are inclusive by design.
Vegan and vegetarian options are always displayed first, encouraging sustainable choices while ensuring they are accessible and appealing to all guests. Our menus are vegan and gluten-free as standard, giving delegates confidence that dietary needs are considered without compromise.
To further reduce our environmental impact, we use local suppliers wherever possible, cutting down food miles while supporting regional producers. This not only minimises our carbon footprint but also guarantees the freshest seasonal ingredients are at the heart of every dish.
Recognising their commitment to operating responsibly, Company of Cooks has been awarded three stars by the Sustainable Restaurant Association.
In partnership with B&M Waste Services, we recycle waste wherever possible across all areas of our venue, including back of house, and monitor our performance through regular environmental reports.
Between September 2024 and July 2025, we have:
This resulted in the production of 1,216kWh, equating to the power needed by 19 TVs and 7 fridges to run for a year, or 1,103 complete washing machine cycles.
Each event floor is equipped with clearly signposted recycling points, making it easy for delegates to separate materials responsibly. These are supported by our in-house teams who manage our recycling.
We encourage organisers to provide accurate delegate numbers, allowing us to cater responsibly and minimise food waste. Surplus ingredients from events are repurposed into delicious daily specials in our café, The Base.
In 2024, The Base joined the waste reduction app Too Good To Go, offering surplus meals to the local community. Used coffee grounds from events and café operations are donated to customers, giving back to the environment in a meaningful way.
Since 2025, we have also been monitoring event waste more closely to identify trends and make improvements.
Spaces at The Spine has been a paperless venue since opening, actively encouraging event organisers and delegates to embrace digital solutions.
Across the building, you’ll find digital wayfinding, interactive screens and digital whiteboards. These tools can display customised branding, welcome messages, agendas and education content to boost delegate engagement.
Event organisers are also encouraged to use digital signage for fine dining events and galas. When printing is required, we work with Liverpool printer Hobs Repro, who use recycled paper and offset impact by planting trees.
The audio-visual technology at Spaces at The Spine is next-generation, designed to be future-ready and support virtual and hybrid events.
All technology and equipment are built into our event spaces, eliminating the need for additional installation and cutting the carbon footprint associated with transport.
Thanks to its environmental measures, features and operations, Spaces at The Spine earned the Outstanding ranking by BREEAM, the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for buildings, and became WELL Certified at the Platinum level through the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI).
As the Royal College of Physicians' (RCP) Liverpool conference and events venue, we align with our organisation's environmental strategy and goals. We have:
