The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) is over 500 years old and oldest medical institution in England.
The RCP was founded in 1518 by royal charter by King Henry VIII. It followed the work of distinguished scholars and physicians, including the king's physician Thomas Linacre, who persuaded the monarch to found an institution which could regulate medical practice in England, grant licences to qualified physicians and prosecute those who engaged in malpractice. From that moment, the College has continued to play a pivotal role in raising standards and shaping public health.
Originally called the College of Physicians, it was only with the restoration of the monarchy at the end of the 17th century that the institution started to refer to itself as 'royal'. The kings and queens of England have always been the RCP's 'Visitors' – the equivalent of a patron for other organisations but a much older term reflecting our heritage.
Since its foundation in 1518, the RCP has had five headquarters in London and two headquarters in Liverpool.
Our first official London base was the home of founder and first president, Thomas Linacre, and was known as the Stone House. Since then the RCP moved to two more homes in central London, until the fourth headquarters were set in Pall Mall in 1825.
It was only in 1963 that the College moved to its fifth and current London location overlooking Regent's Park in Camden.
This modernist building was designed by architect Sir Denys Lasdun, the father of the National Theatre, and was awarded Grade I Listed status, being recognised as a building of architectural and historic interest and importance.
Opened in 2021 and the culmination of a 5-year project, The Spine is home to RCP's new headquarters in the North of England. The building houses our offices, commercial event venue and cafe, The Base, and it is WELL Platinum and BREEAM Outstanding certified.
The RCP's London headquarters are also home to an award-winning conference and event venue, RCP London Events. The venue presents a portfolio of flexible spaces including two built-in tiered auditoriums, meeting and dining rooms, a library housing a collection of rare books, a museum and a medicinal garden ideal for summer entertainment.
RCP London Events is conveniently located in close proximity to King's Cross, St Pancras and Euston stations, and it can be reached by Tube, bus or by foot.
