Event spaces for physical and mental wellness
At the core of Spaces at The Spine stands the belief that the physical and mental wellbeing of delegates, clients and staff is key to successful events and positive experiences.
Our venue incorporates all ten WELL Building Standard concepts to create an environment that has a positive impact on wellbeing. Subtle design features include the use of repeating patterns in nature, which have a naturally calming effect on the mind, and the introduction of plants at various levels throughout the building to improve air quality.
In April 2024, we became WELL Certified at the Platinum level through the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), the only event venue in Liverpool to hold this prestigious title.
Spaces at The Spine has been designed to ensure outstanding levels of indoor air quality. For example, our ventilation systems have been designed to exceed UK best practice standards, air quality is monitored regularly, and installation of materials and interior finishes has been completed using low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). Our indoor plant installation in The Atrium on Floor twelve also ensures the production of clean, oxygen-rich air thanks to the selection of plants included in a recent NASA study.
Safe drinking water can be easily accessed throughout the venue, and water quality is regularly monitored. Great care has been taken to choose appropriate materials for areas where condensation may occur to reduce the presence of mould, microbes and pests. During events, mineral water is bottled directly in-house, supporting our goal to reduce glass waste and recycling.
We believe that food should fuel, not only feed. In collaboration with catering partner Company of Cooks, we have created a food and beverage offer where the healthiest choice is the easiest choice by promoting the consumption of fruit, vegetables and whole grains, providing nutrition, allergen and ingredient details, and offering alternatives for those with allergies and dietary requirements.
Exposure to natural daylight has been proven to optimise humans’ visual, circadian and mental health, leading to a more productive work environment. All event spaces at Spaces at The Spine benefit from exposure to natural light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. Panoramic views of Liverpool and the Mersey are a bonus.
The Spine and our venue have been designed to promote physical activity. All event spaces located on the top three floors are easily accessible via the building’s main staircase, representing the human spine. To encourage movement throughout the day, we recommend that talks, sessions and catering breaks be hosted in separate rooms. Additionally, the helical staircase connecting Floor twelve to the Top floor encourages movement between event floors. Organisers and attendees attending an event at Spaces at The Spine are encouraged to reach the venue on foot or by bike. More information on suggested routes and distances can be found here.
Thermal comfort is crucial to foster productivity. We have state-of-the-art air quality monitoring sensors in place in all our spaces to monitor temperature, humidity and other VOCs. If air quality falls outside WELL-recommended parameters, our team responds immediately to these alerts and can make instant adjustments to ensure event delegates are comfortable.
Networking and common areas preserve a sense of quietness and calm. Each event space is separated with sound isolation walls and doors, meaning no sound is heard in adjoining event spaces. To ensure an inclusive event experience for all delegates, Mobile Connect assistive listening is installed in all event areas.
Spaces at The Spine has been designed to reduce exposure to hazardous building materials. Compounds and products known to be toxic have been eliminated from the initial building stage, and safer replacements have been favoured, including natural materials such as sustainable hardwood and timber. Natural cleaning products and pesticides are used throughout the venue.
Biophilic elements, including the introduction of live oxygen-producing plants and repeating patterns found in nature, have been included throughout the venue to create a sense of wellbeing and connection to the outdoors. The dappled light that is cast into the building through the Voronoi pattern on the outside mimics that of Japanese forest bathing, promoting calm and wellness.
Our spaces designed for community activities, The Steps and The Base cafe, actively encourage community events – from community choirs, local market stalls and pumpkin carving competitions. We also support the surrounding community by using local suppliers.
The Spine is located in Paddington Village at the heart of the Knowledge Quarter in Liverpool’s City Centre.
