Promoting mental wellbeing in events

Spaces at The Spine in Liverpool is a WELL Platinum certified event venue designed to support mental health and wellbeing. With natural light, biophilic design elements and wellness-focused staff initiatives, it creates a calming, sustainable environment for meetings, conferences and events.

At Spaces at The Spine, wellbeing isn't just a trend. It's the foundation of how we create and deliver exceptional events and experiences.

Named as one of the healthiest venues in the North West, our building design was created around the ten principles of the WELL Building Standard (Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind and Community), promoting both physical and mental health for everyone who walks through our doors.

1 - A venue that supports mind and body

Located in the heart of Liverpool's Knowledge Quarter, our venue presents an environment that reduces stress, promotes focus and encourages delegate connection.

From the air you breathe to the materials used throughout the event spaces, every design choice actively supports concentration and calm:

  • Natural light and panoramic views
Large windows and open spaces bring daylight deep into the room. Natural light has been shown to help regulate sleep patterns and increase productivity.
  • Oxygen-producing live plants
The Atrium's indoor plant installation and a living wall connect delegates with the outdoors. Each plant was carefully chosen based on a study by NASA to increase oxygen levels and create a healthier, more relaxing place.
  • Biophilic design and natural patterns
Subtle design features throughout the building include the use of repeating patterns in nature, resulting in a calming effect on the mind.
  • Dappled light effects
On a bright day, the sun shines through the venue’s distinctive Voronoi pattern on the glass, imitating the dappled light that would come through the forest. The venue architect took inspiration from Japan, where doctors often prescribe forest bathing to naturally improve mental health. Referred to in Japan as ‘shinrin yoku’, it’s a method of being calm and quiet amongst the trees, appreciating nature while breathing deeply to soothe stress.

2 - Supporting our team's wellbeing

Happy teams deliver outstanding events: that's why we place our employees' mental health and stress awareness at the top of the agenda.

  • The team is encouraged to eat lunch away from their desks to take a break from work, making full use of the office area featuring live plant installations.
  • We offer online meditation sessions, alongside sound baths and weekly lunchtime yoga sessions to help manage stress and leave everyone feeling re-energised.
  • Every year, the Royal College of Physicians' Wellbeing Fortnight offers staff a chance to breathe, unwind and take part in wellbeing-focused sessions.

3 - Creating a stress-free environment for delegates

We believe that visitors, delegates and guests deserve more than just a function space - they deserve a venue that helps them feel good.

  • Ergonomic, adaptable meeting spaces
Spaces at The Spine features open-plan networking and catering areas as well as flexible, versatile meeting rooms equipped with ergonomic furniture, fresh air ventilation and a smart lighting system.
  • Seamless, built-in AV and hybrid technology
Our AV and event technology systems are built-in and designed to reduce the stress associated with technology, helping organisers focus on people and experiences, instead of logistics. Hybrid and virtual events run seamlessly thanks to our bespoke building connectivity, creating inclusive experiences for all delegates.
  • Mindful event options
If you wish to take mindfulness to the next level, we will help you integrate wellness breaks and quiet zones into your agenda. Quiet rooms can be provided for neurodivergent guests, and conferences can be streamed into a separate room. Learn more on our Venue accessibility page.
  • Sustainability and wellbeing are woven into every aspect of our venue. By using natural materials, recycled finishes and energy-efficient systems, Spaces at The Spine offers healthier environments with a lower impact on the planet. Delegates enjoy cleaner air, balanced temperatures and a sense of calm – proof that responsible design feels good, too. • The food served at events can directly influence how delegates feel, focus and connect. In collaboration with our catering partner, Company of Cooks, we have created wellbeing-led, conscious menus featuring seasonal produce, plant-based dishes and all-time classics: Catering packages & menus.
