Spaces at The Spine sets a new standard for staff comfort

Spaces at The Spine in Liverpool is one of the UK’s healthiest venues, designed to prioritise wellbeing, sustainability and staff comfort through innovative architecture, evidence-based design and policies.

Here at Spaces at The Spine, our workspaces are designed to support the team’s comfort, focus and overall wellbeing. With biophilic features, natural light and interiors that reconnect with the outdoors, all areas of the building were created to nurture both productivity and health.

This focus on people-first design isn’t just aesthetic; it’s proven to enhance how our teams feel and perform every day.

This commitment to wellbeing has now been validated through the BUS Methodology, which recently evaluated occupant satisfaction across the building.

Industry-leading workplace wellbeing results

Measuring how comfortable and satisfied people feel in their workplace, The Spine achieved a remarkable 99th percentile rating in the BUS Methodology survey, placing it ahead of 99% of comparable buildings across the UK. The results demonstrate that our building genuinely supports the needs and wellbeing of those who work here.

Giuliano Camerini, Associate Director at CBRE, said:

“The Royal College of Physicians at The Spine has achieved an absolutely amazing result in its WELL and BREEAM post-occupancy evaluation. The occupant satisfaction data, gathered via the BUS survey, was so exceptional that Arup confirmed: "The performance of The Spine is one of the best sets of results we’ve seen in a long time!" Considering the BUS database includes hundreds of buildings, The Spine stands out as a clear benchmark for user experience and sustainability performance.”

What is BUS Methodology?

The BUS Methodology (Building Use Studies) is a respected benchmarking tool that evaluates how people experience their environment. These findings confirm that our building’s design is doing exactly what it set out to do, supporting the people who use it every day.

“The recent flow²thrive index for version 2 of the WELL Platinum certification confirmed a ‘double brain + score’, which is an excellent rating. This score reflects a high level of satisfaction among employees regarding their cognitive and emotional wellbeing as well as the overall work environment and culture.”

Catherine Hardman, Workplace Manager at Royal College of Physicians | The Spine

More than awards

Comfort and satisfaction are more than just metrics – they translate directly into productivity, staff wellbeing and retention. The BUS survey results reinforce the value of biophilic design and WELL certification, establishing Spaces at The Spine as a world-class workplace that puts people at its heart.

Looking ahead

As one of the UK’s healthiest venues, Spaces at The Spine continues to set a benchmark for workplace wellbeing. Our property team remains committed to its WELL Platinum journey, ensuring the building evolves with its people. By listening to feedback and keeping staff wellbeing at the centre of everything we do, Spaces at The Spine demonstrates how thoughtful design can inspire people to do their best work.

Catherine Hardman, Workplace Manager at the Royal College of Physicians, said:

“The RCP’s property team at The Spine are continuing our WELL Platinum journey, and the recent non-domestic BUS survey results show that we are meeting our occupant’s needs extremely well. Added to that, the recent flow²thrive index for version 2 of the WELL Platinum certification confirmed a ‘double brain + score’, which is an excellent rating. This score reflects a high level of satisfaction among employees regarding their cognitive and emotional wellbeing as well as the overall work environment and culture. Continual monitoring, which we’re committed to developing further, allows us to focus on key areas of improvement as we work towards reaccreditation in 2027.”
